CALLIGRAPHY BUSINESS: A Day in the Life of a Creative Solopreneur

Calligrapher writing at her desk.jpeg

WHAT DO I DO ALL DAY?

I’m a professional calligrapher. So you might think that I spend my days at my desk, with beautiful paper spread out in front of me, writing names in elegant calligraphy.

Yeah…. NO.

I’m actually not a traditional calligrapher. I do very little client work and most of my revenue comes from teaching.

So what does my typical day look like?

That's actually a hard question for me to answer, because every day looks a little different for me. I'm NOT a routines person - I can't stick to them and have stopped trying. So I just go with the flow and do whatever feels important and doable for that particular day.

So really, this post is as much for ME as it is for you. For three whole days, I wrote down everything I did in my business. It gives you a peek into what life as a creative solopreneur is actually like.

Monday March 25, 2019

2:30 - 3:00pm - Stir-fry some veggies and tofu for lunch

3:00 - 4:30pm - Purchase a domain name, do some final testing and tweaking of the funnel I'm building for my online course

8:00 - 9:00pm - Nighttime calligraphy practice

10:00 - 11:00pm - Get the urge to start writing my Pinterest blog post, so I start doing that.

11:00pm - Climb into bed

Tuesday, March 26, 2019

8am - Rolled out of bed, put on my leggings and flannel shirt and made myself a coffee

8:30 - 9:00am - Calligraphy play. Picked up a nib I haven't used in awhile and created an Instagram post to reflect how "bleh" and tired I was feeling that morning

9:00 - 10:00am - Calligraphy continues. I share more about my nib on InstaStories, along with a link to one of my YouTube videos

10:00 - 10:30am - Realize I haven't eaten breakfast, so microwave myself a chicken tamale

10:30 - 1:30pm - Finish up a blog post; work on planning and drafting my Crooked Wednesdays emails for the month of April; take some photos and edit them for my blog posts

1:30 - 2:00pm - Take the dogs out for their walk

2:00 - 2:30pm - Spend some time on Insta responding to comments and DMs

2:30 - 3:00pm - Realize I'm hungry and make myself some basmati rice and frozen Indian food

3:00 - 4:30pm - Continue drafting blog posts and emails

4:30pm - End the day early and take a nap

Wednesday, March 27, 2019

8:00am - Wake up and draft a couple Instagram posts, 'cause the next two days I'll be at an intensive conference

11:00am - Pick up my friend and fellow creative biz owner, Joyce, from the airport and head to DISNEYLAND

(Obviously, this isn't a typical day, but makes me feel pretty fuckin' awesome that I get to do it)

Did ya notice how much time I spend doing calligraphy vs. in front of the computer? Yeah... that's what it's actually like. Business stuff 90% of the time, calligraphy about 10% of the time.

Still, it's a pretty great life and I wouldn't trade it - especially because I've seen what the alternative can be.
